Allergy & Immunology
Allergic and immune disorders affect the body’s immune system — the network of cells and proteins responsible for defending against infections, toxins, and other foreign substances. When the immune system malfunctions, it may overreact to harmless triggers (allergies) or fail to adequately protect the body (immunodeficiency).
Common symptoms of allergic and immune disorders include sneezing, a runny or congested nose, itchy or watery eyes, hives or skin rashes, swelling, wheezing, shortness of breath, frequent infections, chronic fatigue, or digestive issues. Some immune system disorders can also lead to autoimmune conditions, where the body attacks its own tissues, which can cause joint pain, skin changes, or organ inflammation.
Each condition has its own unique symptoms — for example, asthma may lead to coughing and wheezing, while food allergies can cause hives or gastrointestinal upset.
Persistent, recurrent, or severe allergic or immune reactions should be evaluated by an allergist or immunologist to identify the cause and provide appropriate treatment.

An allergist and immunologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating disorders of the immune system. They have advanced training in immune responses and allergic reactions, helping patients identify triggers and manage both acute and chronic conditions.
Allergists and immunologists care for patients with conditions such as:
• Seasonal or environmental allergies (pollen, dust, mold)
• Food or drug allergies
• Asthma
• Eczema or chronic hives
• Primary or secondary immunodeficiencies
• Autoimmune diseases (such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis), often in collaboration with other specialists
• Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
They use diagnostic tools such as skin testing, blood work, and lung function tests to evaluate symptoms and monitor immune system function. Treatment may include allergen avoidance strategies, medications such as antihistamines or corticosteroids, immunotherapy (allergy shots), or specialized care for immune deficiencies.
Whether you are experiencing chronic allergic symptoms or have recurrent infections, an allergist and immunologist can help identify the cause, guide treatment, and support your long-term health.
