What causes Insect Hypersensitivity?
Insect hypersensitivity occurs when the immune system reacts abnormally to proteins in insect venom or saliva. Common causes include:
- Stings from bees, wasps, hornets, or ants – venom triggers immune response
- Bites from mosquitoes, fleas, or other insects – saliva proteins can cause allergic reactions
- Genetic predisposition – family history of allergies increases risk
- Other atopic conditions – asthma, eczema, or food allergies can raise susceptibility
What are the risk factors?
You may be more likely to develop insect hypersensitivity if you:
- Have a personal or family history of allergies
- Have other allergic conditions such as asthma, eczema, or food allergy
- Have experienced prior severe reactions to insect stings
- Are frequently exposed to insects due to work, hobbies, or living conditions
