About

What is Congestive Heart Failure?

Heart failure occurs when the heart becomes an inefficient pump and cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs, this is called systolic heart failure.Typically this occurs when the heart is weakened.  However, there are forms of heart failure in which the heart is in fact strong and pumps well, but is unable to relax.  This is known as preserved function heart failure.

Is CHF comm

Yes — it is a leading reason for hospitalization in older adults.

Can CHF be treated?

Yes. CHF is initially addressed by identifying the underlying cause and treating that.  There are also several medications that work extremely well to improve the heart's function, reduce fluid overload, and improve symptoms.  There are also certain types of pacemakers and defibrillators that can resynchronize the electrical portion of the heart's function that leads to further improvement in both symptoms and life expectancy.

Causes

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Untreated hypertension
  • Cardiomyopathies
  • Valvular heart disease
