Cardiomyopathy

About

Heading

What is Cardiomyopathy?

Cardiomyopathy is a condition where the heart muscle itself is abnormal.  This occurs when the heart becomes thickened, weakened, dilated, and or enlarged.  This causes the heart to reduce its ability to pump effectively.

Are cardiomyopathies common?

Fortunately, no.  The prevalence of any type of cardiomyopathy is low, approximately 56 cases per 100,000 people.

Can cardiomyopathy be treated?

Yes, but the success rate varies depending on the type of heart dysfunction.  Although it may not be fully reversible, treatment can improve symptoms, slow disease progression, and increase life expectancy.

Causes

What causes cardiomyopathies

Potential causes include:

  • Genetic factors
  • Viral infections
  • Alcohol misuse
  • Certain medications (chemotherapy)
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Thyroid or metabolic disorders
  • Coronary artery disease

In many cases, the cause is unknown (idiopathic).
