Symptoms

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain during activity
  • Swelling
  • Muscle spasms
  • Joint instability
  • Limited motion
  • Bruising
  • “Popping” sensation (common in ligament tears)

Diagnosis

Diagnosis includes:

  • Detailed physical exam
  • X-rays to rule out fractures
  • MRI for soft-tissue injuries like ACL tears or rotator cuff injuries
  • Ultrasound for muscle or tendon injury
  • Functional movement assessment

Treatment

Treatment depends on the type and severity:

Non-surgical therapy:

  • Rest and activity modification
  • Ice and elevation
  • Bracing or taping
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Physical therapy to restore strength and movement
  • Injections (corticosteroid or platelet-rich plasma in select cases and it’s not always covered by insurance)

Surgery:

  • ACL or meniscus repair
  • Shoulder stabilization or rotator cuff repair
  • Treatment of fractures from sports activities

Early treatment helps athletes return safely and avoid re-injury.
