Diagnosis of anxiety will often begin with a psychological evaluation. A mental health professional will explore thoughts, feelings, and behavior which the client is associating with anxiety. The symptoms a client is experiencing can then be compared to the criteria set forth in the DSM-5, which offers points of reference for various mental health diagnoses. Occasionally, your provider will also provide a physical exam or request a blood test to potentially rule out any other conditions that may be causing anxiety-like symptoms.
Anxiety disorders can be treated with medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of both. The best approach depends on specific factors for each individual, however the strongest research support for effective treatment is often in trials where a combination of medication and psychotherapy is implemented.
